    Winning and losing in the creative industries: an analysis of creative graduates' career opportunities across creative disciplines

    Following earlier work looking at overall career difficulties and low economic rewards faced by graduates in creative disciplines, the paper takes a closer look into the different career patterns and economic performance of “Bohemian” graduates across different creative disciplines. While it is widely acknowledged in the literature that careers in the creative field tend to be unstructured, often relying on part-time work and low wages, our knowledge of how these characteristics differ across the creative industries and occupational sectors is very limited. The paper explores the different trajectory and career patterns experienced by graduates in different creative disciplinary fields and their ability to enter creative occupations. Data from the Higher Education Statistical Agency (HESA) are presented, articulating a complex picture of the reality of finding a creative occupation for creative graduates. While students of some disciplines struggle to find full-time work in the creative economy, for others full-time occupation is the norm. Geography plays a crucial role also in offering graduates opportunities in creative occupations and higher salaries. The findings are contextualised in the New Labour cultural policy framework and conclusions are drawn on whether the creative industries policy construct has hidden a very problematic reality of winners and losers in the creative economy

    Bohemian graduates in the UK: disciplines and location determinants for entering creative careers

    The human capital and regional economic development literature has become increasingly interested in the role of the ‘Bohemian occupations’ on economic growth. Using UK higher education student micro-data, we investigate the characteristics and location determinants of creative (bohemian) graduates. We examine three specific sub-groups: creative arts & design graduates; creative media graduates; other creative graduates. We find these disciplines influence the ability of graduates to enter creative occupations and be successful in the labour market. We also highlight the role of geography, with London and the South East emerging as hubs for studying and providing Bohemian graduates with more labour market opportunities

    The impact of tourism on agriculture in the Okavango Delta, Botswana.

    Thesis (M.A.)-University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2003.In recent years the use of tourism as a development strategy by third world governments has increased, resulting in the intersection of international tourism and local agricultural strategies. The aim of this thesis is to critically assess the impact of tourism development on local agriculture in the Okavango Delta in Botswana. More specifically, the study appraises the current state of tourism and agriculture in the Okavango Delta, assesses the social, economic and environmental effects of tourism development on the Okavango Delta and its communities, examines local agricultural production and consumption patterns, assesses the patterns of supply and demand of food in the region, and evaluates the impact of tourism on local subsistence agriculture, while making use of both qualitative and quantitative data sources. The Okavango Delta region is faced with several socio-economic problems. These include high unemployment levels, unequal regional development, income inequalities and extreme levels of poverty. 'Rural-urban' migration by local subsistence farmers in search of formal employment opportunities has risen steadily since the early 1990s, resulting in unprecedented social changes to the inhabitants of the Delta, and the abandonment of traditional farming practices. This, together with the limited interaction between the local population and tourism industry, is increasingly leading to tension between local and foreign parties in the region. The large proportion of foreign owned tourist facilities and foreign investment results in major economic leakages, and the exclusion of Motswana from any form of meaningful participation in the tourism industry. The presence of foreign tourists in the Delta enforces the need for imports, increasingly damaging local agricultural production as both production and consumption becomes imported. If tourism is to be of any benefit to the local population in the Okavango Delta, there has to be local involvement and ownership. The fostering of linkages between tourism and other sectors, particularly agriculture, is imperative in attempting to bring about socio-economic growth in this region

    Thesis (Ph.D.) - Indiana University, Folklore and Ethnomusicology, 2015ETHNOGRAPHY OF RESISTANCE POETICS: Power and Authority in Salale Oromo Folklore and Resistance Culture (Ethiopia, Northeast Africa) This dissertation is an interdisciplinary folkloristic search for resistance poetics in tradition-oriented folklore of the Salale Oromo in central Ethiopia using both a diachronic and a synchronic approach. The Salale are part of the Tulama branch of the Oromo nation who are engaged in a national liberation struggle. Drawing on critical ethnographic methods, this study provides a folkloristic outline of power and authority in the resistance culture of the people based on the data I collected in Salale in 2009 and 2010 through interviews, focus-group discussions, and participatory observations into the notion of “progressive folklore.” The data shows that the meaning of Salale resistance poetics transcends the ephemeral common understanding of the resistance concept. Here resistance is not used as shorthand just to refer to social protest, peasant rebellion, or more preferably, banditry; it is rather the poetics of emancipatory act. An emancipatory resistance is not simply a strategic plan to change the status quo, oppositional to social change, or a strategy for temporary material gain. In the Salale social world, an emancipatory resistance is rather a spiritual engagement and necessitates a poetics of making, transforming, and escalating the struggle in spirit as in words and praxis. Its end goal is fundamental human freedom and protection for nonhumans from harm. Methodologically speaking, the data shows that, the notion of resistance poetics is a locally grounded theoretical stance, namely, strategic traditionalism, social banditry, ecopoetic practices, ethnic genres knowledge of verbal art, which constitute the “resistance poetics” and can be modeled into a high level analytical significance of critical ethnography to examine unequal power relations. The notion of “hidden resistance,” I argue, which we often read about in resistance studies is simplistic. It is simplistic because it centers exclusively on “deterministic economism” and “pragmatic resignation” of the subordinate to the dominant class. Tradition is used as a subversive means of contra-posing cultural domination, political exclusion, and economic exploitation, particularly with respect to land and land resources, in a disempowering situation. An alternative Salale history is constructed from a micro-historical perspective in which folklore functions as a supplement to historical facts and to augment the folkloric models

    A Study of teacher stress exploring practitioner research and teacher collaboration as a way forward.

    There is widespread concern over the high levels of reported work-related stress, job dissatisfaction and psychological distress associated with teaching and the effects of stress on teacher's sense of well-being and their willingness to stay in the profession (Borg, 1990; MSLAT, 1996; Troman, 1998; Schonfeld, 1990; Wilson, 2002). Much of the traditional research on teacher stress has been carried out by external 'experts' using quantitative survey type approaches to analyze occupational stress levels resulting in restrictive data analysis unrepresentative of the true picture of stress in the teaching profession. Researchers have advocated a more holistic approach incorporating mixed methods combining both qualitative and quantitative methods in order to gain subjective teacher reports of stress and coping mechanisms resulting in a fuller picture on teacher stress with future recommendations grounded in research. Recently, the reflective practice movement in healthcare (eg:-Boswell, 2007) has suggested using a more integrative approach to advance practitioner knowledge and empower them to improve practice through reflection to create an understanding ofthe issues within a local context. My research was particularly interested in the issues relating to teacher stress including the way teacher stress was being measured and the effectiveness of qualitative over quantitative methods, the inclusion and exclusion practices of disruptive students and the use of practitioner research to encourage teacher collaboration as a way of dealing with teacher stress. Practitioner-Research methodology has been successfully adopted in Nursing and Health-Care and has recently been used in Education with mixed findings some successfully advocating p-r while other research was hampered by bureaucracy and top-down managerial agendas. In relation to this a single UK Secondary school was researched as a case study by the investigator who taught Sixth formers A'level Psychology at the school. The research was conducted in phases using a qualitative multimethod approach incorporating triangulation to include staff, students and researcher reflections about practice in order to encourage staff collaboration, empowerment and meta-cognition. A reflexive stance was thus adopted to underpin the research methodology. Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted on 20 teachers (varying levels, ages and mixed gender) to assess the proposed research objectives. Classroom observations and student interviews were carried out for a year 10 class to complete the data collection. The findings revealed how students felt caught up in a selffulfilling prophecy with teachers seeing them negatively, leading to a spiral of failure and lack of motivation and the teacher interviews with both newly qualified and experienced teachers, uncovered how different coping strategies were used to deal with disruption, classroom and task management in general. The most important findings came from middle managers who claimed there was poor communication between senior tiers and lower teaching tiers with a strong sense of bureaucracy ruling their decisions. In order to bridge this gap, the practice development phase of the research tried to establish collaborative meetings in order to encourage teachers from all levels to self-reflect, deal with problematic issues and action research solutions of teaching practices. The Senior Management Team (SMT, including the Head) did not encourage staff or the researcher to proceed further with the final phase and the research was abruptly halted. Despite this, I believe that practitioner-research is a viable methodology in education research as it gives 'ownership of knowledge' to the practitioner using a self-reflexive stance to increasing their evidence-based practice resulting in a growth in meta-cognition to make improvements in practice. I feel, we need to increase insider research and use Action Research spirals and collegial collaboration as a wayforward
